The extension was announced late Thursday by the Unitedf Food and Commercial Workers UnionhLocal No. 7, which represents abouy 17,000 Denver-area grocery workers now negotiating new contractswith Albertson’s and . It is the third extensionh in theSafeway talks, which begabn in early April. Safeway workerz voted last month to call for a strike if but neither side has indicated that a striks is likely in thenear future. Both Albertson’s and King Sooperse workers are operating without contractsright now. Negotiation s center around the issues of pension benefitsand health-card plans.
Safeway and King Soopers have offeredpension cuts, pay raiseds for just a portion of the workerz and new preventative health-care benefits, saying that with the rise of non-unioh grocery stores, some cutbacks must be “I think this [latest extension] gives us an opportunity to continue to negotiate and really be able to tackle the tougb issues like wages and pension benefits,” said Kris Safeway’s Denver-area director of public affairs. The latest counter-proposal from Safeway workers calls for annual pay increasee of 75 cents per hour over the duratio n ofthe five-year contract, according to UFCW spokeswomah Laura Chapin.
It also seeks assurances that workers can continue receiving pension benefits at age 50 rather than having to wait untiklage 62, that current health benefitw are not decreased and that current health-care premiumws are not increased. Safeway has not made a new contract Staaf said. Sherree Carlson, a 15-year Safewahy employee from Westminster, expressed frustration over the pace of negotiationsa in a news release put out bythe “We gave you a proposal a week ago, and you keep comingt back at us with the same crumbs,” Carlsonm said. “We need a fair deal and we need to keep the work and the workerz here inour community.
