The hotel concept, while still may be a highlight of a slightly tweakexd development plan forthe $315 million Canal Side pegged for the lower Main Street area, just south of the New York State Thruway. Canal Side was unveiledc in Decemberby , the local arm of , which is chargedc with overseeing projects along Buffalo’s waterfront. Canaol Side’s final development plans will be shown to the publix in July as part of a series of mandatede public hearings connected to environmental reviews ofthe project. The environmental reviews are due to be completedfthis fall.
Moving the hotel, rumored to be one from the Marriottgcorporate family, is perhaps the biggestg adjustment in the Canal Side development plan. proposed renovating the eight-story Donovan Building into a multi-use complex anchorede by a hotel. Sourceas now indicate the Donovan Building may be primarily used for Class A office space and apartmentsor condos. A hotelp is considered a crucial element inCanal Side’sx overall development plan. The Webster block is currently used as a surfaces parking lot for downtown workers during the day and for patrons attendintg events at HSBC Arena on nightsand weekends.
The blockj is located between HSBC Atrium and thearena and, at one time, was considered the site of a proposer 14-story Adelphia Tower. Matt Davison, spokesmahn for Erie Canal Harbo rDevelopment Corp., said while the Canal Side plan is being the agency’s primary focus remains on finishingh the demolition of Memorial Auditorium and preparing for construction of a 150,000-square-foort Bass Pro store to anchor the downtowj development project.
