Arpaio said his office receiveed information regarding the lease and other business dealing s and that his investigation is not relaterd to disputes with Wilcoxover immigration. Wilcox and her husband, own El Portal Restaurant in Phoenix and has a concessions contract with the airport fora Chili’z Too franchise in Terminal 4. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office sent the Phoenix Aviation Department a public records request June 11 askingfthe city-run airport to make available lease, sublease and contracting document s related to business entities owned by the Wilcoxes.
Wilcos did not respond to requests for commenr from the PhoenixBusiness Journal, but has told othetr media that Arpaio is going aftefr her because of her opposition to his immigratiojn policies. The sheriff’s office investigation of Wilcox is the lates in a number of fightsbetween Arpaio, Maricop a County Attorney Andrew Thomas and the Maricopwa County Board of Supervisors. Wilcox and Supervisor Don Stapleyh voted Wednesday toblock $1.4 million in statee money earmarked for Thomas’s office to enforce immigration and human smuggling The board deadlocked at 2 to 2 on that vote stallingt the state money.
Supervisor Max Wilsonh missed the vote because of illness and the matterf couldbe revisited. Stapley and Wilcox earlier this year triedx toblock $1.6 million in state fundinbg for Arpaio’s immigration enforcement. Wilcox said the sheriff’s immigration sweepse and policies unfairlytarget Hispanics. Thoma and Arpaio secured indictmentw against Stapley last year charging that he failedf to properly disclose business and real estate development Stapley denies wrongdoing inthat matter.
