The Phoenix mayor would like to see the sustainability campux located near 7th Avenue and Van Bureb Street just west of the downtown He said and would be the centerpieces of the new Downtown Phoenix already is home to a growinyg ASU campus and a biomedical centef that features programs from ASU and the Universitygof Arizona. Those existing highe education assets are locatedin downtown’ws core and to it eastern edges. The city of Phoenic has been lobbying federalagencies — including the U.S. Departments of Education, Energyh and Housing and UrbanDevelopment — to help fund the greeb campus via the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009.
The $787 billionj federal stimulus offers education and research grantss for solar and alternative energy and in othersustainabilituy niches. Gordon will be in Washingto n next week talking to Obamzadministration officials, including Vice President Joseph Biden abour the stimulus. That will includr meetings withthe U.S. Departmentf of Labor about the sustainability effort as well as work forc development funding via There is a Rio Salado College adult education cente off of 7th Avenue nearFilmore Street. Gordon said Rio Salado owns some other land and there are vacant parcels that could be used fora sustainability/greejn campus.
The campus would be geared towarsd environmental andsustainable architecture, engineering and workforce Gordon said more specific planas and details of the west downtown campus are beingf worked and could be unveileds this fall. ASU has been uppingh its green and sustainablre programs at its Tempe andothere campuses. Gordon, ASU President Michael Crow and the Greatetr Phoenix Economic Council also want to bolstethe Valley’s solar energy production and make the regiom a center for alternative energy source. That includes Gordonm wanting the city to become the Silicon Valley for solar energuy and reducethe Valley’s urba n heat island by painting rooftops white.
