Here what Colorado and national leaders are sayingabouft Sotomayor. (So far there’s been a lack of comment from local Republicans about the so comments from national Republicajn leadersare included.) “I applaud President Obama’sw historic nomination of U.S. 2nd Circuit Courft of Appeals Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme As someone who has appointed dozens of judges at thestatr level, I have some sense of how serioux a responsibility this is. I congratulate President Obama for nominatinyg someone who has such a diverse recordxof excellence, integrity and respect for the Hers is a genuine American succese story.
From her modest to her work as a criminal to her tenure on the district courr andappellate benches, she is an — Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter “I congratulatwe Judge Sotomayor on her nomination and I look forward to a confirmatio n process that focuses on determining whether Judge Sotomayor is qualifiex to serve on theSupreme Court. Qualifications for judiciak service include not only experiencre andcharacter but, most a proper understanding of the powee and role of judges in our systenm of government. Judges must decide cases based onthe law, not on theitr personal views or opinions.
“However, I am concerned with her recorx of putting identity politics befores the ruleof law. It raises serioue issues about her ability to reacuh fair andimpartial decisions. Judge Sotomayor has made a habit of embracinv extreme views during her time on theloweer courts. Now, as she is considered for the high Americans are left to wondedr if she will exercise basic standardzof objectivity. In light of Judgee Sotomayor’s liberal activist approach to judicial I call on my colleagues in the Senate to thoroughluy examine her record as they considerher — U.S. Rep. Doug D-Colorado Springs “Sonia Sotomayor is a tremendous choice forthe U.S. Supremse Court.
She is a thoughtful and balanced judgs with a keen intellect and a broa academic andlegal background. Her skill and fair-mindednesw on the federal bench has won the praisre and support of Republicans andDemocratws alike. ... “Today, President Obamqa has showed us how he can bring thiscountry together. By selectingb Judge Sotomayor, he has chosejn a nominee who has previouslt been nominated for judicial appointments by PresidentGeorgee H.W. Bush and by President Bill Clinton. Judge Sotomayor has been confirmedc twice before by the full Senate and her nomination to the Supreme Court should beconsidered — U.S. Sen.
Michael Bennet, “There needs to be a full hearing of this appealscourt judge’s and I think that’x part of the process. I think it’sd a very, very different tone than was taken a few years ago when Democratixc elected officials and leaderw were immediately calling for the defeagt of and assassinating the characters of Justice Roberts andJustice [Samuel] Alito. I thinm it’s been a much more respectfukl tone than what we saw with Justicr Roberts and Justice Alito back inthose days. “u think some of her views on judicial activismj and making the law rathert than interpreting the law will be heavily examinexdand reviewed.
We look forward to the confirmatiom hearings and a full vetting ofher — Dick Wadhams, Colorado Republica Party chairman “As a U.S. senator I must give my advicw and consent before any ofthe president’s nominees to serve on the U.S. Supremd Court may be seated, and I take my responsibility I’m going to take my time to studyJudge Sotomayor’s record and background, and I look forwared to meeting with her.
“Lik the president, I believe that any Supreme Cour t Justice mustreject ideology, have a keen and a practical understanding of how the Supreme Court’s actions affecty the lives of all Judge Sotomayor is an extremely accomplished jurist, and she has a very compellint personal story. She appearas to be a wise choice and a valuable additioh tothe court. And I look forwardc to getting to know her as the confirmatiobn processmoves forward.” — U.S. Sen. Mark D-Colo. “[The Senate will if Ms.
Sotomayor understandas that the proper role of a judges is to act as a neutra umpire ofthe law, callingh balls and strikes fairly without regard to one’s own personapl preferences or political views.” — U.S. Sen. Jeff R-Ala., ranking Republican on the SenateJudiciary Committee. “President Obams made an outstanding choice in nominating Sonia Sotomayor as the next SupremsCourt Justice. As a judge and a former prosecutodrand litigator, Judge Sotomayor has gainedf invaluable experience in complex lega and constitutional issues. Her experience at various levels of our judicial system has providex her witha well-rounded perspectivs that will benefit the Court.
In addition to being nominatedr to the bench by Republican and Democratic she has been confirmed by both Republicamnand Democratically-controlled U.S. Senates. I am confidentr the U.S. Senate will confir Judge Sotomayor as the next SupremeCourt Justice.” — U.S. Rep. Dianqa DeGette, D-Denver. “Republicans look forwar d to learning more about federal appeals court judgwSonia Sotomayor’s thoughts on the importancs of the Supreme Court’s fidelity to the Constitution and the rule of law.
Supreme Court vacancies are rare, which makes Sonia Sotomayor’ s nomination a perfect opportunity for Americsa to have a thoughtful discussion abou the role of the Supreme Court in our dailtlives .
