Sandra McDonough, the alliance’ president and CEO, told the Portland City Counci l on June 17 that the city needsa to do everything it can to provide more The council is reconsidering expanding the River District by nearlhy42 acres, as well as increase the amount of bondxs the city can assume to fund projects withih the district. The council and the Portland Development Commissiob had first sought the expansion nearly two yearws ago but were thwartedx bya citizens’ group The Friends of Urban Renewal group had charged that the Rivef District expansion proposal, which would have also redirecte d $20 million in district-generated funds to a new East Portland elementary didn’t fit technical urban renewal definitions.
The council will vote on the measurwenext week. McDonough said urban renewal providexs funding for investmentsin infrastructure, social services and public-private partnerships. “W e need to create jobs,” she “We have an opportunity to do just that by adoptingg theserevised findings, which address the issuea that have been raised about the River District We can then move forwarsd with the important projects that depenc on these funds.” City Commissioner Nick Fish has said that the constructio of a new homeless services center could depenrd on urban renewal funds if constructionb is to begin this year.
McDonoughb said the alliance backs using urban renewal fundse to buildthe center.
